Frequently Asked Questions

TURBT (Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor) by Dr. Sanjeev Narang

What is TURBT?

TURBT is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure performed through the urethra to remove abnormal growths inside the bladder and, when needed, obtain small tissue samples for analysis. There are no external cuts.

Why might my doctor recommend TURBT?

TURBT is advised to remove bladder lesions, control bleeding, relieve irritation-related symptoms, and to provide tissue for microscopic evaluation to guide further management.

How is the procedure done?

A thin camera (cystoscope) is passed through the urethra into the bladder. Under direct vision, a small wire loop is used to shave off visible growths and cauterize the area to minimize bleeding.

What anesthesia is used?

Depending on your case and comfort, TURBT may be done under spinal or general anesthesia. The care team will discuss the safest and most suitable option beforehand.

What warning signs should prompt a call to the doctor?

Seek medical advice for fever or chills, inability to pass urine, worsening clots or persistent heavy bleeding, severe pain not relieved by medication, or foul-smelling urine.

How long does TURBT take and will I need to stay in the hospital?

Most procedures take 20–60 minutes. Some patients go home the same day; others may stay overnight for observation, especially if a catheter is placed.

Will I have a catheter after TURBT?

A temporary urinary catheter is sometimes placed to drain the bladder and help flush out blood clots. It’s typically removed within 24–72 hours, as advised.

What should I expect during recovery?

Mild burning while urinating, urinary urgency/frequency, and blood-tinged urine are common for a few days (sometimes up to 1–2 weeks). Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy lifting/strenuous activity, and follow the prescribed medications.

When can normal activities resume?

Light activity can usually resume within a few days. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and straining for about 2–3 weeks or as individually advised.

Will I need follow-up?

Yes. A follow-up visit is important to review the procedure findings, discuss any lab reports (if tissue was sent), assess healing, and plan any additional treatment or surveillance.
